New song comes from classroom discussion on the meaning of song lyrics.

(WTAM) - A Portage County English teacher and two of his students have created a holiday song dedicated to U.S. troops serving overseas.

It's called "I Won't Be Home For Christmas", and it’s beginning to spread on YouTube.

Steve Howell teaches a course called “Literature of Lyrics in Popular Music” at James A. Arthur High School in Garrettsville. They were studying Christmas music and decided to create a song of their own.

Howell tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that some of the school’s alumni are serving in Afghanistan, so they did a twist on "I'll Be Home For Christmas". Helping create the song were students Amanda Pfeifer and Aaron Boyle.

Howell says the students are amazed at the more than 74,000 hits the song has received on YouTube. They have even received feedback from soldiers overseas.

Howell says he has learned as much from creating the song as his students have.
