Based on a real life story, set at the end of World War 2, General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones has a hoot with this role) is in Japan to oversee the transition of power from the defeated emperor Hirohito. He designates General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox in his most challenging role yet) to figure out if the Emperor ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Fellers is chosen because of his knowledge of Japan and its culture, after spending pre-war time there in love with a local. Half of the movie centers on his search for his lost love.
The movie is a great history lesson, balanced by romance. It’s interesting to see the aftermath of war from the perspective of the side that lost. And what a gorgeous film to watch! The scenery is exquisite. Fox continues to grow as an actor. And Tommy Lee Jones is always a joy to watch- he’s a treasure.
