NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WTVN) -- A central Ohio doctor has been charged with the murder of a pregnant woman found in her car.

Ali Salim of New Albany was indicted Wednesday in Delaware County on nine felony counts in the death of 23-year-old Deanna Ballman and her unborn child. Those charges include rape, assault, kidnapping, corrupting another with drugs, abuse of a corpse and evidence tampering.

"We're obviously one step closer to bringing justice to the family and friends of Deanna Ballman with today's arrest of Salim," said Delaware County Sheriff Russell Martin.

He says Ballman's mother was told of the arrest shortly after it happened.

Salim is being held in the Delaware County Jail. Prosecutor Carol O'Brien plans to ask a judge for a high cash bond. Salim is a native of Pakistan, but has a green card and lives in the U.S. O'Brien is concerned he could be a flight risk, but his defense attorney denies that.

"This case hit a chord with probably everyone I know in my office, and the sheriff's office, as well as the community," O'Brien said.

Ballman lived in Pataskala and was reported missing before her body was found Aug. 1 northeast of Columbus. A coroner determined she died of acute heroin intoxication.

Relatives said Ballman went to New Albany for a house-cleaning job from an online classified ad. Her mother said Ballman called saying she wasn't feeling well, and then the call dropped.

Martin says Salim has no previous criminal history.
