Storm-related costs are mounting for the city of Marion, putting strain on a budget already lean after firefighter concessions and police layoffs. Since Friday’s storm, the city’s street crew has been working 10-hour days to remove debris. The city’s park department also is racking up some overtime to pick up downed trees and limbs in recreation areas. And today, sanitation crews are putting in some extra work to make up for the refuse that wasn’t collected yesterday because it was July the Fourth. And then there’s the Marion County Fair going on this week, adding to the workload. The city can apply for reimbursement given that Gov. John Kasich and President Obama declared a statewide emergency in Ohio. After the city’s storm costs are calculated, the information will be submitted to the Marion County Emergency Management Agency, whose director will send it to the state. The city was reimbursed $39,500 in 2008 for clean-up costs from a storm in March of that year.
